Course Overview: Public and Economic Health Sciences

The Public and Economic Health Sciences course provides an interdisciplinary perspective on the factors that influence population health and the economic frameworks that shape healthcare delivery. Designed for students pursuing careers in public health, healthcare management, policy, and research, this course equips learners with the knowledge to analyze health systems, evaluate economic impacts, and develop strategies to improve health outcomes at the community and national levels.

The course begins with an overview of public health principles, including epidemiology, health promotion, disease prevention, and population health assessment. Students will study the social determinants of health, such as income, education, occupation, and access to healthcare, and their influence on health disparities and outcomes. Emphasis is placed on understanding how public health initiatives can reduce disease burden and enhance quality of life.

Economic aspects of health are integrated throughout the course. Students will explore health economics, including the allocation of resources, cost-effectiveness analysis, healthcare financing, insurance systems, and the economic evaluation of health interventions. The course examines how economic policies, funding models, and resource management influence healthcare access, efficiency, and sustainability.

Practical applications are emphasized through case studies, data analysis, and policy evaluation exercises. Students will develop skills in interpreting public health data, assessing healthcare programs, and proposing evidence-based interventions. The course also covers global health perspectives, highlighting international comparisons, health system performance, and the economic challenges faced by low- and middle-income countries.

By the end of the course, students are expected to:

  • Understand the principles of public health and population health management
  • Analyze social and economic determinants of health and their impact on communities
  • Apply economic evaluation tools to assess health interventions and resource allocation
  • Interpret health data to inform policy and program development
  • Develop evidence-based strategies to improve health outcomes and system efficiency

Graduates of this course will be prepared for careers in public health agencies, healthcare administration, policy analysis, research institutions, and international health organizations, where they can contribute to improving health systems, designing effective health programs, and promoting equitable and sustainable healthcare delivery.
