À propos du cours

Course Overview: Tropical Infectious Diseases

The Tropical Infectious Diseases course provides an in-depth exploration of diseases that are prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, with a particular focus on their causes, transmission, prevention, and control. The course is designed for students pursuing careers in medicine, public health, epidemiology, and global health, especially those intending to work in regions where these diseases remain a major public health concern.

Students will study a wide range of infectious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi. Core topics include malaria, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, dengue fever, yellow fever, cholera, and neglected tropical diseases such as schistosomiasis and leishmaniasis. The course examines how environmental, social, and economic factors such as climate, sanitation, population density, and access to healthcare contribute to the spread and persistence of these illnesses.

A strong emphasis is placed on understanding disease transmission cycles, including vector-borne and waterborne pathways, as well as host-pathogen interactions. Students will learn to identify clinical presentations, interpret diagnostic methods, and understand current treatment protocols. The course also explores emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases, highlighting the challenges of disease control in a globalized world.

Public health strategies are a central component of the course. Students will examine disease surveillance systems, outbreak investigation methods, vaccination programs, and international health initiatives aimed at controlling and eliminating infectious diseases. The role of organizations such as the World Health Organization and other global health bodies is also discussed.

Practical learning is supported through case studies, outbreak scenarios, and data analysis exercises, enabling students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world situations. This approach helps develop critical thinking and decision-making skills in high-pressure health contexts.

By the end of the course, students are expected to:

  • Understand the epidemiology and transmission of major tropical infectious diseases
  • Recognize clinical symptoms and apply appropriate diagnostic approaches
  • Evaluate treatment and prevention strategies for infectious diseases
  • Analyzing the impact of environmental and social factors on disease spread
  • Apply public health principles to disease control and outbreak management

Graduates of this course will be well-prepared for roles in clinical practice, public health agencies, research institutions, and international health organizations, where they can contribute to the prevention and management of infectious diseases in tropical regions.
